Overview
Firefighters in the oil and gas industry are responsible for protecting life, property, and the environment from fire hazards and emergency incidents. They operate in high-risk zones such as refineries, offshore platforms, and petrochemical plants, where rapid response and specialized safety knowledge are critical.
Primary Job Responsibilities
- Emergency Response
- Respond to fires, explosions, chemical spills, and other emergencies.
- Rescue personnel from hazardous environments, including confined spaces and high elevations.
- Administer first aid and basic life support until medical professionals arrive.
- Fire Suppression & Rescue Operations
- Conduct search and rescue missions in smoke-filled or structurally compromised areas.
- Operate firefighting equipment such as hoses, extinguishers, breathing apparatus, and aerial ladders.
- Control and extinguish fires using foam, dry chemical, and water-based systems
- Fire Prevention & Safety
- Inspect and maintain fire protection systems (sprinklers, alarms, extinguishers).
- Conduct fire risk assessments and hazard identification.
- Participate in safety drills and emergency evacuation exercises.
- Equipment Maintenance
- Clean, inspect, and repair firefighting gear and vehicles.
- Test fire hydrants and ensure the emergency water supply is operational.
- Maintain readiness of all emergency response tools and systems.
- Training & Education
- Participate in ongoing training in fire suppression, hazardous materials handling, and emergency medical procedures.
- Educate staff on fire safety protocols and emergency response plans.
Qualifications & Skills
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; specialized fire academy training and preferably having working experience in the Middle East.
- Certifications:
- Civil Defense or equivalent fire safety certification.
- HAZMAT awareness or technician-level certification.
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or First Aid certification.
- Having a valid driving license to operate a Fire truck.
Experience: Prior experience in industrial or oil & gas firefighting is highly desirable.
Skills:
- Physical endurance, agility, and strength.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to operate complex equipment.
- Calm under pressure with excellent decision-making skills.
Work Environment
- High-risk industrial zones include offshore rigs, refineries, and chemical plants.
- Exposure to extreme temperatures, toxic substances, and confined spaces.
- Shift-based work including nights, weekends, and on-call duty.
